LORD DUCAL (Bombastic Shiraz x Ducal Princess) is one of the great stories in Australian greyhound racing history and he is sure to leave quality progeny on the ground. Lord Ducal won the 2009 Group 1 Melbourne Cup defeating superstar Dyna Lachlan by two and a half lengths. Lord Ducal’s winning time of 29.53 seconds was the second fastest in the race’s 54 year history, just 0.02 seconds outside of the race record set by three-time Group 1 winner Betty’s Angel.
Two starts later Lord Ducal tore knee ligaments in a semi final of the Brisbane Cup, he was at his prime and ready to take the mantle off group winners High Earner and Dyna Lachlan. He would spend the next 18 months on the sidelines through injury. In May 2011 at Sandown Park he made a triumphant return winning in a time of 29.60 seconds at the ripe old age of 4. It was the quickest time of the night and 1 length quicker than the Group 3 Dawson Final which was run that night. Lord Ducal finished his career on a winning note at Sandown in a time of 29.66 seconds at over 4 and a half years of age, simply unheard of these days.
Lord Ducal had 34 starts in his injury interrupted career for 11 wins and 11 placings amassing $230,715, on current prize money figures he would have won close to half a million dollars. He had tremendous pace when he hit the ground and excellent stamina, if he got to the lead he was never run down. His early progeny have just hit the ground and are displaying very similar characteristics. In his first litter he sired he has already produced Raisafus who is third favourite in the Group 2 Great Chase Final as this is written. In that litter is also Sir Ducal, a city winner over 515m and then won in the city over 600m in one of the quickest times of the year at his first try at the distance.
DOLL’S SCHOONER is superbly bred being a daughter of Brett Lee and a full sister to top stud dog Give Me Five. Give Me Five is currently ranked number 12 sire in Australia for number of wins with a very healthy winning percentage of 15%. Doll’s Schooner was a race winner herself winning 4 times and placing 5 times from 15 starts. All her wins were at The Gardens over 515m and two of those wins were in best times of the night. Dolly has had one litter to hit the track so far by Premier Fantasy which has produced winners in Diego Siyan and Diablo Siyan. Her second litter to Collision have just been broken in with glowing reports.
The mating of Doll’s Schooner to Lord Ducal was chosen as Lord Ducal will inject pace and stamina into the progeny and the nick between son’s of Bombastic Shiraz and daughters of Brett Lee is starting to produce excellent results. The progeny contain a sex balanced triple of key ancestor Malawi’s Prince in the 4th generation, something similar that is found in champion greyhound Brett Lee and thoroughbred Makybe Diva.
